Common HVAC Myths

Apr 27, 2023

Most homeowners are familiar with the basics of their home's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, but there are a lot of myths and misconceptions that surround the technology. Let's debunk some of the most common HVAC myths and help set the record straight.

The Larger the Unit the Better

The size of the system varies based on the needs of the space, and a larger unit is not necessarily preferable. While it may appear that a larger system might offer more effective cooling or heating, this is not always the case.

If a system is too huge for the space it must cool, it will ultimately end up cycling on and off excessively, which can waste energy and prematurely wear out the system. On the other hand, if it is too tiny, it will be unable to maintain a steady temperature in the building.

Contact an HVAC consultant to ensure that the system size is adequate for the area it heats and cools. Essential factors you can consider include the age of the home, the temperature zone, the number of people who reside in the house, and the square footage if you want to select the right system for the home.

Higher or Lower Thermostat Settings Warm or Cool Your Home Faster

HVAC systems have no speed settings and are simply on or off. Setting the temperature significantly lower or higher than you wish will not cause the system to cool or heat faster. Instead, the higher or lower settings will force the system to cycle on and off more frequently, which can cause greater wear and tear on the internal components.

The best technique to achieve the desired outcome is to set the thermostat to a realistic temperature and let the system do its thing. Furthermore, you can program many thermostat models to attain a specific temperature by the moment you enter the house.

Once-a-year Filter Changes Are Enough

Airborne particles such as dust, grime, and debris accumulate in the filters on a daily basis, so if you wait a year to replace them, the filters will be filthy. This limits air flow, making your system work harder and decreasing machine efficiency.

A dirty filter can restrict airflow, which can lower system efficiency and lead to blower motor failure, compressor failure, insufficient cooling, and even an overheated furnace overheating and frequent system shutdowns. Do not double up filters, it does not help filter the air and restricts airflow as well. If you have a return air grill that takes a filter and one on the main system, pick one and use it only.

As a general rule of thumb, change 1" filters every month, 2" filters every other month and large filters such as 4 3/8" or 5" every 4-6 months. It is a good idea to change more frequently if your environment is especially dusty or smoky. Different systems require specific types of filters, so do some research to determine which type is ideal for your system.

Sealed Vents and Doors in Unused Rooms Saves Energy

Closing vents in empty rooms might have the opposite of an energy-saving effect, as it can interfere with air flow and obstruct your vents. Furthermore, if you seal your ducts incorrectly, the blocked vents will allow air to seep through them.

Closing doors to empty rooms has a similar effect since it restricts airflow and causes your furnace to work harder in other areas. These activities will not help you save energy, and you should look for other ways to save energy.

No Need for a Pro if It's Functional

HVAC systems are complicated and require specific knowledge and experience to operate and repair efficiently. Work on these systems with an experienced and certified specialist because mistakes can be costly and deadly. Professionals have adequate experience to detect and diagnose problems and perform the necessary repairs or replacements to keep your HVAC system functioning safely and efficiently. A system should be given a "physical" twice a year, once in the spring when you start running the AC and once in the fall when you fire up the heat.

Furthermore, professionals will be up to date on the newest technological breakthroughs and can assist you in selecting the best system for your house or business. They may also advise you on energy efficiency and safety precautions to ensure that your system runs as efficiently as possible.
