Furry pets and HVAC systems don't always make for a good mix. However, you can do a lot to keep your pets comfortable and safe while also keeping your HVAC system functional and free of problems. Here are some HVAC tips for pet owners.

1. Groom Your Pets and Keep Them Clean

Your pet's hair can easily block your filters, clog your air ducts, and generally become a detriment to the entirety of your HVAC system. An easy way to keep pet hair out of your HVAC system is to keep your pets clean and groomed.

The more shedding your pet does, the more likely your HVAC system will suffer from it. Keep the shedding to a minimum to ensure your HVAC system doesn't suffer and your air quality remains good.

2. Change Your Filters More Often

Despite your best efforts, your pets will still do some shedding. Pet hair can become a nuisance, but pet hair also means pet dander. When pet dander spreads through the air, it can create several problems.

The dander can end up clogging air filters, which is one concern. However, a larger concern from dander comes from the fact it's an allergen and can become a health concern if too much of it builds up.

When your air filters clog, your HVAC equipment will work harder than it should, which will turn into premature wear and higher bills. You should routinely swap your air filters in general, but you may need to do it more often if you have pets.

3. Clean Out Vents and Air Ducts

Pet hair and dander can clog vents, ducts, registers, and grilles. You can deal with this simply by making sure you keep those places clean. You can vacuum them with a hose, and wipe them down with a damp, soft cloth if they're looking a little dirty.

Hair buildup clogs will negatively affect your HVAC system. In addition, these types of clogs can also give bacteria and viruses a good place to grow, invade your ducts, and pollute your indoor air.

4. Invest in an Indoor Air Quality System

Air purifiers and cleaners can help keep a lot of the dander from reaching your HVAC system's filters and vents. These products and devices also help improve overall air quality by removing other airborne bacteria and allergens, which would also plague your home and your HVAC system. Bad indoor air quality also affects pets.

5. Keep Your Pets Away From HVAC Components

Some pets like to lay on vents to soak up some of the warm or cool air coming out of them. This can introduce hair and dander directly into your ducts and onto your air filters.

In addition, pets can close vents when they should remain open, and vice versa. Some smaller pets may literally fall into an open vent. Pet owners should invest in vent covers to prevent all these issues.

You should also keep your pets away from any of your HVAC equipment as the equipment can become a hazard for them, or they can accidentally damage the equipment. This includes:

  • HVAC appliances in the basement
  • Outside central air units
  • Wiring or tubing for your HVAC system

If you cannot train your pets to keep away from these things, you should make sure to fence, block, or lock these areas.

A preventive maintenance program will help to keep your HVAC system free of issues and performing at peak efficiency for years.
